Folk Tale . 8:12

Title: Story of a widow who leaves her two sons to remarry and settle in another village.
Language: Rengma(Njokhwen)
Description: The story is about a woman whose husband died when their two sons were still very young. She was economically, phsyically and socially helpless and was in need of a partner. So, when an abled man approached her to be his wife, she readily accepted it. According to the tradition, a woman is not allowed to take children with her to another man’s house unless they are ready to adopt the children legally. Fearing rejection, she left her two sons orphaned and remarried the man belonging to another village. Her selfish act offended the two sons so much so that they refused to recognize their mother when they happened to meet in one of the hunting expeditions. When the mother came to know of her son’s attitude, she regretted her decision so much that due to intense weeping she lost one of her eye and was not the same anymore.
The younger brother later died accidentally to due to wasp’s bite. The elder bother, now being alone, was in grief but eventually overcame it and went ahead in life. He was a hard-working man who soon became a rich and respectable man in the society. Hard work, self-respect and a brave heart made the elder brother prosperous and successful.
