Title: Apuki toku iliki toku

Language: Sumi

Description: This folksong tells the tragic story of Apuki Toku (boys’ dormitories) and Iliki Toku (girls’ dormitories) in Natsumi village. One night, a young man returning to his dormitory saw an evil spirit with a red shawl tied around its waist, digging into the earth. Realizing that the spirit was destroying the village, he rushed to the girls’ dormitory to save his sister, but in the panic, he could only grasp the hand of his beloved. Soon after, a massive landslide struck, sweeping away the dormitories and taking many lives. This song keeps alive the memory of that sorrowful night and remains an important part of Natsumi village’s oral tradition.
