Title: The story of why Daughters leave their parents’ home
Language: Galo
Description: This is an old story from a time when customs were very different from what we see today. In those early days, it was not the daughter who left her parents after marriage; instead, the son would go and stay in his wife’s home. People believed this was the right way, until one family experienced something that changed this tradition forever.
Their son had been married and sent to his wife’s house. When he returned after some time, his parents were shocked to see him. He looked pale, weak, and unhappy, as though the warmth and strength of his childhood home had slowly left him. His parents felt deep sadness and worry, wondering why their son had changed so much.
To understand this better, the elders decided to observe nature itself. They asked both the son and the daughter to plant a bamboo plant near the house. The daughter’s bamboo grew leaning outward, stretching away from the home, while the son’s bamboo grew straight and strong toward the house. The elders took this as a sign. They believed it showed that a son’s roots belonged in his parents’ home to care for them and their land, while a daughter’s heart naturally reached toward creating a new family.
From this understanding, the custom changed: daughters began to go to their husband’s home, and sons remained to support their parents.
