Title: The Tale of two young lovers
Language: Chokri
Description: Love story of Dari and Rakhrülü
A long time ago during the time of our foreparents.
There lived one young man and a woman
The young man’s name was “Dari”, a handsome and sturdy man of Thenyizumi
The woman’s name was “Rakhrülü”, a beautiful woman from Chedema
As the terrace fields of Thenyizumi and Chedema are in adjacency, the young couple began to know each other, and would happily work in the same field every day.
Subsequently, Dari and Rakhrülü began to like each other, they would feast together with their best meat and drink and return home.
At that time, even when Thenyizumi had a day of religious observance abstaining from work or festival, Dari would go to the field.
Now Dari’s father was curious about his son’s behaviour “What had really happened to my son?”, he said.
He went following his son to the field to see his son and found the two young couples sleeping and sweating inside a hut.
His dad commented, “What to do more then!”.
He cut the leaves and shaded them and returned home.
As that time was during head hunting, although the young couples loved each other dearly, could not join together in marriage.
However, they did not stop their friendship there but kept the true love between them
Even though they couldn’t join together in marriage, they gave their best wishes to each other.
“If you die, on the day of your death, make a big fire on that retreat ‘pusüyitsü’ and let me see the smoke of the fire”, Rakhrülü said to Dari.
“If I die, spread a phava khwü (the white shawl) and let me see”, Dari said to Rukhrülü.
Time passed by and both of them grew old.
One day Dari passed away.
When his coffin was carried for burial with people yelling; a fire was made with a large smoke in the retreat ‘pusüyitsü’, Rakhrülü saw the smoke from Chedema, realised the death of her beloved, and cried out, “Awu Dari! My true beloved has indeed passed away”.
Dari’s grave still exists. Our foreparents say, “If Dari’s grave is cleaned or even a little fire touched it, there would be drought and no rain in that year.”
We learn from this folk tale that the physical body will die away and decay, but real love and friendship will last forever and not decay.
