Title: The tale of Lankonrhoni
Language: Lotha
Description: Okay, so this is a story I heard from my mom, and she heard it from her mom too. Long ago, in a small village, there was a woman named Lankonrhoni and her son Arilao. Now, Arilao was young, handsome, and all the girls in the village were crazy about him. Of course, that made the other men really jealous, and they started plotting against him.
One day, the villagers planned a traditional fishing, and they said anyone who didn’t go would have to give a huge pig as fine. Lankonrhoni had a feeling something bad might happen and told her son not to go, but Arilao was stubborn. He said, “We can’t afford the pig, Ma,” and joined anyway. You won’t believe what happened next, the jealous men found him perfect for their plan and killed him by pounding him along with poisonous vines. Only his closest friend managed to save a fingernail and gave it to his mother. Lankonrhoni was crushed, but she didn’t let anyone see her pain.
Later, she decided to get revenge. She invited all the village children over for a feast. Gave them food, asked them to help her fix the holes in her house, and while they were busy… she blocked all the exits, locked the door, and set the house on fire. All the children burned. It sounds crazy, right? Then a crow flew over the fields, cawing weirdly, and the villagers rushed back to see what had happened. They found their children gone. In panic, they started blaming each other, fighting, and eventually killed each other too. In the end, the whole village was gone.
It’s a really sad and dark story, but it also shows how strong a mother’s love can be. My mom always says, a mother’s heart can bless, but if it breaks, it can also curse. And it also tells us something about human nature—jealousy, anger, and grief can destroy more than we can imagine, while love, if twisted by pain, can burn brighter than fire.
