Title: The Story Of Thunu

Language: Khezha (Chakhesang)

Description: Long ago, in the days when headhunters still walked the land, a mother and her young son went to the fields to work. All day they toiled under the sun, and when the evening came, the other villagers packed up their tools and went home.
“Come, sister, it is late,” they said. “Go home and rest.”
The boy tugged at his mother’s hand. “Mother, let us go too. We can return tomorrow.”
But just then, a bird called “Thunu” began to sing. Its chirping sounded like the voices of people still working in the distance. Believing she was not alone, the mother said, “There are others still in the fields. We will leave when they do.”
But the voices were only the cries of the bird. The fields were empty. And soon, the headhunters came. They killed the mother and her son, carrying their heads away as trophies.
And so the elders say: Do not let your work bind you too long. Time must be kept, for there is always tomorrow for work, but not always for life.
