Title: The story of Ramphan
Language: Kyong Yi (Lotha)
Description: This is a Lotha folktale that has been passed down from generation to generation, recounting the bravery of a man named Ramphan. At a time when fear loomed over the villages, a ferocious tiger prowled the land, snatching away women from their homes and devouring them without mercy. The people lived in terror, unable to protect their families from the beast’s cruelty. It was then that Ramphan, moved by the suffering of his people, made a solemn vow to rid the land of the tiger and restore peace to the village. His journey was not an easy one he had to summon courage, prepare his weapons, and seek strength beyond his own, for the tiger was no ordinary animal but a creature feared and spoken of in whispers. This tale not only tells of Ramphan’s struggle and cunning in finally slaying the tiger but also of what came after, how the village rejoiced in their newfound safety, how Ramphan’s name became a song on the lips of the people, and how his act of courage turned into a legend that continues to inspire the Lotha community even today.
