The story of Ghonili and Inakha

Folk Tale . 7:02

Title: The story of Ghonili and Inakha.

Language: Sumi

Description:

In a Shena village, there lived a young warrior named Inakha and his wise, virtuous wife, Ghonili. They were admired for their love and harmony and were blessed with a beautiful daughter.

However, during a time of war, Inakha became infatuated with Chevili, the daughter of his friend. To save his life from Chevili’s brothers, who had discovered the affair, Inakha reluctantly agreed to marry Chevili. Heartbroken by this betrayal, Ghonili refused to share her husband, stating, “An ivory necklace cannot be worn double.” She left, taking only a broken bamboo cistern as a token of her departure.

Ghonili later married Sumixi, a wealthy warrior, and together they became a prosperous couple.

Meanwhile, Inakha’s life descended into poverty. Despite their separation, Ghonili continued to show kindness to Inakha, secretly leaving food for him whenever she witnessed his hardship. Eventually, Ghonili died during childbirth, fulfilling an old saying that any woman who exits a house through the back door dies in childbirth. Inakha, filled with regret, died shortly after from a heart attack.

This story underscores the sanctity of marriage, illustrating that separation brings sorrow, while love, acceptance, and sacrifice are essential for a successful marriage.
