Title: REV SIELIEZHÜ SORHIE
Language: Tenyidie
Description: Rev. Sieliezhü Sorhie was a pioneer missionary who worked among the Angamis and the neighbouring tribes in Nagaland, India. He played a significant role in introducing Christianity to the community and facilitated the first baptism too.
In 1881,on 25th February, C. D. King came to Kohima for mission work and started his work among the people. For the first five years, his effort bore no fruit as no one converted to Christianity. Then the people were strongly bounded to their belief in Animism.
In 1885, God worked among the people and four of them from Kohima Village got converted to Christianity. They were:
1. Lhousietsü Rutsa -21 June,1885
2. Lhouselie Miachieo-July,1885
3. Sieliezhü Sorhie- 30 August,1885
4. Neirütsü Kire -September 1885
But within a short period of time, all of them backslided. Three of them went back to their old belief while one of them, namely: Sieliezhü Sorhie got married according to the custom of the forefathers/unbelievers. For this act, his name was crossed out from the church register from early 1887 to mid 1895. However, he still preached the gospel and did mission work among his people as well as in the neighbouring villages, and among the other tribes.
By the mid of 1895, C.D.King saw his good works and his faith and took him back into the Church. He became the first Angami to partake in the Lord’s Supper.
In 1905, he became the first Pastor of the first Baptist Church in Kohima, later came to be called Khedi Baptist Church. It is the oldest Church not just in Kohima, but among the Tenyimia community.
In 1917, Rev. Sieliezhü Sorhie was ordained as the first Reverend among the Tenyimia. He passed away on January 17,1930.
