This narration is about the customary laws regarding land inheritance practiced in the village of Chizami in Phek district.
The ownership system of the village is strictly followed according to the customary laws and practices which is transmitted from one generation to another. Only males can inherit the landed ancestral properties such as homestead, terrace paddy fields and jhum areas however in some cases women also inherit such properties from the parents but after her death, that land, unless it is acquired property, will not go to her heirs; it will be returned to her husband’s clan.
