The Story “Ayir ka sungdong den meimteba”, is an Ao Folk tale about a girl who falls deeply in love with a boy which is actually a tree and transforms into a human (male) only during night and visits the girl every night in the tsüke (a place where unmarried women sleep). In the story, the boy was handsome and had the appearance which could make him stand out in the crowd, he was tall and muscular. Eventually, the girl got attracted to his charms and fell deeply in love with him. The boy only appears at night and was no where to be seen during daylight. The girl started wondering where the boy actually lived and why he’s not seen during daytime. So, she started a hunt to find out where the boy lives. But despite putting such efforts she couldn’t find a trace. Thus, this is when she decided to ask Tsükibutsüla (a woman whose husband is dead) where can she find the place where the boy stays. Then Tsükibutsüla instructed the girl to tie a Nokleptsüyi (Dao case) in the boy’s waist and to sent him off with it in the morning. The very morning when the girl had went to fetch some water from the pond like she always did, she was shocked to see that a tree just nearby the pond had the same Nokleptsüyi tied to it which she had tied on the waist of the boy. Therefore, this is when she realized that the boy was actually a tree and she was hurt, and in that very moment, the tree started singing a song dedicating it to her beauty,
He sang ” She was pretty as the falling of the water from the mountains, she always catches his attention and he can’t stop gazing at her beauty, though there may be thousands of Chungliyimtitsür, you are prettiest of all”.
