Title: The story of MOMOLA : an offering to the river

Language: Chang

Description: According to a chang legend, there once lived a girl named MOMOLA. One day her mother took her for fishing. They both tried their best, but they could not catch any fish. Frustrated, the mother at last made a promise that if the river blesses her wish, she would offer her daughter to the river. As soon as she uttered that word, they were blessed with abundant fish, but the mother did not keep her promise. As a result, the water level rose and flooded the world with a roaring sound mo.mo.mo as calling out the name Momola. At last, the mother gave her daughter to the river. After the water returned to its normal state, the mother went in search for her daughter. However, to her surprise, she found her daughter turned into a mermaid. As time passed, Momola gave birth to a tiny fish. One day, she decided to meet her family, and so she kept her little one in a manger and went to see her family. When she returned, her little one was gone and to her surprise, she found out that her relatives thought it was a gift and ate her little one. With much pain, Momola went back to her home. The chang named that peculiar type of fish as “mong” which is not eaten for food, as it was believed that it got transformed from a human.
